Legendary Chrissie Hynde-fronted act, The Pretenders, are jumping onto the online music cavalcade, revealing plans to introduce their latest album online as an MP3 release.
The band is making one track per week available in the MP3 format, working with a different online partner each week for the release, ‘Break Up The Concrete’, which isn’t expected to ship until 23 September in the US. This is the first release from the band since 2002. The first track – ‘Break Up The Concrete’ – is available now through the band’s website. Other future online partners include Apple, iLike, CBS and Yahoo!
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. “The Pretenders were one of the seminal bands of the second British Invasion,” the Hall of Fame website explains, “Rising out of London in 1979 with a forceful, self-titled first album. Their melodic but hard-charging sound suggested a union of punk and New Wave approaches. Moreover, being older and more seasoned than their punk peers, they drew inspiration from bands of the first British Invasion, including the Kinks and the Who, as well American soul music.”
