Sony makes nice with iTunes on film, music follows?

The reviews called it the “must-see comedy of the summer” and as winter closes in Sony has revealed an iTunes plan for the DVD release of ‘Pineapple Express’.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has signed-up to offer an iTunes Digital Copy of the film on the DVD or Blu-ray versions of the movie sold in the US from January 6.

UK and US customers who purchase a DVD also get an additional Digital Copy of the movie which can be popped inside iTunes, and then played back on the computer or Apple’s range of digital devices.

This means iTunes, iPod, iPhone and Apple TV owners will be able to extract a legitimate copy of the film for playback on their computers and digital devices when they buy the disc. Sony will also offer versions for playback on Windows PCs and the PlayStation Portable.

All four major US networks go HD on iTunes

Apple today announced that all four major US broadcasting networks are offering shows in high definition for sale through iTunes.

Shows, including the likes of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Lost” from ABC, “CSI” and “CSI: Miami” from CBS, “Bones” and “Prison Break” airing on FOX, and “Heroes” and “The Office” from NBC Universal are available now.

The iTunes Store has so far sold over 200 million TV episodes sold, including more than one million HD episodes purchased since the launch of HD programming on iTunes last month. Continue reading

Apple, Disney sit-out collective movie studio plan

Major Hollywood film studios are teaming-up, working together in an attempt to create a standard approach to the DRM types used in various online movie stores – though some notable names are refusing to play ball.

The studios have begun what they are calling their Open Market digital initiative, an attempt to simplify the way consumers interact with online film services by harmonsing DRM use.
