We7 launches free music-on-demand service

We7 today officially launched its ads-supported music service, offering UK music lovers the chance to listen to whatever music they choose for free, and offering a chance to buy their favourite music.

The service’s extensive catalogue includes music from a three million strong catalogue of artists including Kings of Leon, Pink, Nickelback, and Estelle.

We7 is adding up to 30,000 tracks a day to its collection of over 3 million licensed tracks, including many new releases as they become available.

Creative accounting looks bleak

Zen and MuVo music player manufacturer, Creative Technology, returned net losses of $31.7 million in its fourth quarter ended June 30, up from a loss of $19.3 million a year earlier.

Sales dropped 16 per cent to $139.5 million, the company said, warning of lower sales ahead on account of “adverse economic conditions” and increased future competition – prinicipally from Dell’s potential move back into the market.

UK firm ships low-cost iPod touch clone

UK-based company Sonix7 has announced a range of touch-sensitive digital players that compete directly with the iPod touch.

The Sonix7 Extreme and the Sonix7 Lite are a lot cheaper than Apple’s product. The iPod touch costs £199 (8GB model) or £269 (16GB model). The SonicLite costs £39.99 while the Pro version costs just £59.99. The Sonix7 Extreme costs £79.99.

Sonix7 is marketing its new devices with the slogan, “everyone likes to be touched”. The Sonix7 Pro MP4 player has a 2.8-inch, 320-x-240 resolution TFT touchscreen display and carries 4GB internal flash memory, expandable using a Mini SD card.

Zune’s biggest fan rejects Microsoft

Microsoft’s Zune has lost its biggest fan, Steven Smith.
Smith was the man who last year declared himself so nuts for the Zune he went along and got three Zune-themed tattoos….now he says he wants to get rid of them and doesn’t want to be part of the Zune “community” any more. The news there, of course, is that there’s a Zune community in the first place. Still, with the product only available in the USA, perhaps there’s small semi-religious outposts of Zune worshippers, engaged in ritual iPod sacrifices, or something.

Creative intros Zen Mozaic player

Creative has introduced its ZEN Mozaic portable media player. The device offers a built-in speaker, an 0.8-inch LCD colour screen, FM radio and voice recorder and is available next month in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities. A 16GB model will be available after the summer. Prices range between £49.99 for the 2GB model, scaling up to £119.99 for the not yet available 16GB device.
