A trio of overnight reports that seem worth a mention but already appear well-worn online – with Apple planning to store movies and TV shows in the cloud, iTunes team members trying to tempt labels away from free download deals with Amazon and Virgin America dumping Flash in a love tryst with the iPad.
CNet tells us that Apple reps have been speaking with major film studios about enabling iTunes users to store movies/TV shows they legally own in the cloud on Apple servers. This extends previous notions Apple intends letting iTunes users host their collection in the cloud for access from anywhere using any connected device.
Peter Gabriel has made significant fresh investment in digital recommendation service, The Filter.
The service has attracted the continued support of current investors Peter Gabriel and Eden Ventures, and bought new investors aboard, including from Roderick Banner, Chairman of WPP-owned media agency, Banner Corp, former CEO of LoudEye Michael Brochu (through EMM Investments) as well as John Taysom, founder of We7.com and a former investor in, among others, Yahoo & Infoseek.
The Sundance Film Festival will make ten short films of the 96 entered into its latest event available for free download through iTunes.
This year the Festival’s Short Film Program comprises a record 96 short films from 5,632 submissions, from U.S. and international filmmakers. Submissions grew by 10% over last year.
The 25th Sundance Film Festival takes place between January 15-25, 2009.
In making the move, Netflix also confirmed its interest in helping push for services and hardware to let consumers access streaming content on their TVs, showing Apple to have some competition in the den.
Apple’s iTunes Store has introduced a range of limited-time discount price offers in the US and UK, with different offers in each territory.
US iTunes users are being offered a bargain basement of film releases sold at under $5. The selection of films on offer change on a weekly basis and currently includes ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’, ‘Total Recall’ and ‘Karate Kid’, among others.
i.TV today announced the integration of Netflix, into its TV and movie guide for the iPhone and iPod touch.
“We are very pleased to offer i.TV users a new way to discover and rent their favorite DVDs from Netflix using an iPhone or iPod touch,” said Brad Pelo, i.TV founder and chief executive officer. “Many i.TV users are already Netflix customers and those who are not yet with Netflix will want to sign up after they see how easy it is use Netflix on our iPhone application. This integration is the first of several major third party integrations that will be announced through the end of this year and into 2009.”
Netflix on i.TV allows people to discover media from a catalogue of over 100,000 DVDs, complete with detailed information and recommendations concerning the titles. Users can sign up for a Netflix account or link an existing Netflix account using an iPhone or iPod touch.
Koch Entertainment Distribution’s Koch Digital imprint plans to make its catalogue of home videos available for purchase through iTunes.
Michael Rosenberg, president of Koch Entertainment Distribution, said, “Making key titles from our home video library available on iTunes helps position Koch as the premier independent aggregator in the digital distribution space with the broadest distribution network of any independent. Koch Digital is now the leading independent digital distributor for both audio and video content.”
HBO Sports is offering a series of short boxing films called ‘Ring Life’, which will be made available for free through iTunes and across HBO’s digital media platforms including HBO.com, HBO Mobile, HBO’s YouTube Channel from November 10.
The series is inspired by the lives of eight hopeful boxers with dreams of becoming champions, explaining how they juggle real life with the pursuit of their boxing dreams.
“With so much at stake and tremendous pressure building within each of the 24 segments, watching these boxers go through hardships is enough to hook any viewer,” said Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports.
The crunch is beginning to impact the DVD movie market, as consumers turn to online services, spurn luxury items as recession bites and thoughts turn to Christmas, with some optimistic the fall in demand for pre-recorded DVD titles (films) suggests a move to Blu-ray (it won’t).
Taiwan’s pre-recorded DVD manufacturers have revealed orders for DVD films have fallen, “short of their expectations by 30-40%”, a report explains.
The companies will give subscribers to both services the chance to stream thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix directly to the TV using TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and HD XL digital video recorders.
