BBC, ITV, BT team as iPlayer takes on iTunes

The BBC is serious about attempting to deploy its iPlayer video-on-demand technology as an industry standard, announcing new partnerships with ITV and BT, “to promote a common industry approach and consumer offer to deliver on-demand TV over broadband.”

Such a pan-industry approach may in future pit the BBC and partners against other existing online TV solutions, including iTunes in the UK and similar services elsewhere.

Big Brother is watching – crisis, or opportunity?

New Media Knowledge’s (NMK) next event looks at the pros and cons of behavioural targeting.

The event, which takes place in London on November 25, asks if  behavioural targeting will save internet publishing or if it is instead a moment that marks the death of privacy.

Although the potential audience for internet publications dwarfs that of print editions, digital ad revenues have lagged well behind those for the print publications they are slowly replacing, driving the industry to look to targeting ads to specific viewers.

iTunes, We7, Radiohead seize DMA gongs

Apple’s iTunes, Radiohead and We7 featured among the winners of this year’s BT Digital Music Awards, announced last night at the London Roundhouse.

iTunes beat down 7digital, eMusic, Music Station and Napster to win the Best Music Store category.

We7 beat 7digital and Sellaband amongst others last night to win the Best Digital Music Service category, yet another highlight for the service which signed distribution deals with the Orchard this week, following on from deals made with Sony BMG, EMI and Warner Music.

Radiohead won the Artists Of The Year award, while Coldplay won the Best Rock/Indie Artist award and their website, Coldplay.com, won the Best Official Music Website gong. Continue reading

eMusic warns BPI, ISP deal to affect digital music

The recent music industry deal with ISP’s could put power over music retail into the hands of the networks, undermining the good work done by the likes of iTunes, Napster and eMusic, eMusic CEO David Pakman warns.

As part of the deal between labels and ISPs to combat file-sharing in the UK, the music industry has made a commitment to license catalogue to ISPs in order that the latter are enabled to launch their own download services for customers.

And with the debate on net neutrality still actively ongoing, Pakman is concerned ISPs may eventually throttle bandwidth in order to favour their own services over those that pioneered legitimate download sales.

UK ISPs reach file-sharing policing deal

Six of the UK’s biggest internet service providers have reached a deal with music industry body the BPI to combat music-piracy.

The six biggest UK ISPs, BT, Virgin, Orange, Tiscali, BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse, have all agreed the deal, which commits all parties to work together to reduce illegal music file-sharing. Thousands of letters will also now be sent to ‘net users the BPI suspects of illegally sharing music.
