Apple wants video in the cloud, hates Amazon’s download deals, no Flash for US Virgin….

A trio of overnight reports that seem worth a mention but already appear well-worn online – with Apple planning to store movies and TV shows in the cloud, iTunes team members trying to tempt labels away from free download deals with Amazon and Virgin America dumping Flash in a love tryst with the iPad.

CNet tells us that Apple reps have been speaking with major film studios about enabling iTunes users to store movies/TV shows they legally own in the cloud on Apple servers. This extends previous notions Apple intends letting iTunes users host their collection in the cloud for access from anywhere using any connected device.

Virgin act Tweets free track on millionth follower

a fine frenzyComing in fresh from the “this band gets digital” department comes news of Virgin act, A Fine Frenzy, who are celebrating the recruitment of their millionth follower on Twitter with the release of a free download.

To celebrate the moment and to thank fans, the band is tweeting a free MP3, an acoustic version of their single, “Blow Away”. This version was recorded during a recent visit to Cincinnati radio station Q102.

BPI scores a UK.gov own goal

The BPI really doesn’t get it – that’s a subjective judgement, but one based on the organisation’s own behaviour. The Guardian reports that the music industry group sent a stiff letter to ISPs and the UK government just before the recent deal between the organisations and the BPI was announced.

BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor said that while the organisation welcomed the deal between ISPs and the music industry, it felt it important to “clarify” it didn’t think the agreement an “exhaustive solution”. And then went on to threaten its ISP partners with legal action…

Ex-Def Jam, Rob Stevenson to lead Virgin America

Nick Gatfield, EMI Music’s new President, A&R, North America, UK & Ireland, has appointed Rob Stevenson to a top creative post leading EMI’s Virgin imprint in America. 

As President of Virgin US, Stevenson will report to Gatfield and will be based in New York.  He starts in his new position on August 15.

UK ISPs reach file-sharing policing deal

Six of the UK’s biggest internet service providers have reached a deal with music industry body the BPI to combat music-piracy.

The six biggest UK ISPs, BT, Virgin, Orange, Tiscali, BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse, have all agreed the deal, which commits all parties to work together to reduce illegal music file-sharing. Thousands of letters will also now be sent to ‘net users the BPI suspects of illegally sharing music.
