Germany calling: Sky TV plans an iPad push

News Corp. doesn’t just own a load of newspapers, it also owns Sky – and it looks like it intends introducing iPad-compatible Sky TV subscriptions, beginning with a roll-out in Germany later this month.

Sky Deutschland, News Corp.‘s German pay-TV provider will introduce its Sky Anywhere TV viewing service for the iPad in mid-May. The iPad application was created locally within five weeks.

“It will start with sports content, but there’s no reason why it can’t extend to everything Sky has to offer, both on a linear basis and in on demand. Most importantly for our customers with have the rights to do that, which means we can provide the services to them on either a low incremental cost, or in some cases no cost,” said Sky Deutschland CEO, Brian Sullivan. Sky opening up to more viewers online

Sky plans to offer its online video content to a much wider range of viewers, making shows available online through its Sky Player service to viewers who aren’t subscribed to its TV shows for the first time, the company said this week.

Sky will launch its subscription TV service via its online Sky Player platform meaning UK and Irish customers will be able subscribe to watch a package of channels from Sky on their PC or Mac without the need to install a TV-based service as well.
