Fox News on iTunes $30 cable-battle plan

Sometimes you got to sweat as an Apple journalist – watch Macworld’s Dan Moran pretty much tell Fox he doesn’t really know what Apple is planning with iTunes, beyond the rumours he’s read on 9 to 5 Mac.

iPlayer downloads for Mac this month?

There’s been a whole hoo-hah about the BBC making it possible to download its TV shows to Mac and Linux computers – now it seems the broadcaster may be moving to launch the service, which is already available on Windows, and the launch could come this month, if a report’s to be believed.

The broadcaster has frequently gone on the record to say that it wants to make it possible to download shows from iPlayer to the Mac, but has castigated Apple for refusing to license FairPlay to the corporation in order to easily achieve this.

Large US radio broadcaster inks iPhone app deal

Radio shows from 62 US stations are now available to iPhone and iPod Touch owners running the Radiolicious application following a landmark deal between developers, MySimBook and US radio network, Regent Communications.

Regent owns and operates 62 stations (50 FM and 12 AM) clustered in 13 markets in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Texas.

Now Regent’s 57 existing internet radio station streams will be made available through Radiolicious. Regent is the first major radio group to contract for all of its streaming stations to be available through the application.

Future chance, future challenge for the Apple TV

Apple’s “hobby” the Apple TV has a chance at becoming a ubiquitous household item, though the company may need to add support for non-Apple media services and implement many new features if it seriously intends making an iPod-level impact on this important growing market.

The reason Apple has the chance is visible in the growing momentum behind development of solutions to bring online video to the front room – a sector becoming quickly more intense.

Online video on-demand services such as iTunes or Hulu are hot properties, meaning many more devices – including TVs offering features similar to the Apple TV – should begin to reach market en masse starting next year. And even if Apple does not develop such solutions there will still be winners and losers in the race to offer the ‘iPod’ equivalent of the multimedia for the front room box.

Sky opening up to more viewers online

Sky plans to offer its online video content to a much wider range of viewers, making shows available online through its Sky Player service to viewers who aren’t subscribed to its TV shows for the first time, the company said this week.

Sky will launch its subscription TV service via its online Sky Player platform meaning UK and Irish customers will be able subscribe to watch a package of channels from Sky on their PC or Mac without the need to install a TV-based service as well.

Jonathan Ross seems in vogue for all the wrong reasons, pilloried both by the press and the NIMBY residents of Middle England for some juvenile prank with comedian Russell Brand in which both men dropped the ball while trying to humorously promote a band called the ‘Satanic Sluts’.

Forced to take months off by the BBC’s refusal to stand up for its talent in the face of Mary Whitehouse-style criticism, Ross this week purchased five new model MacBooks to help while away his time.

Social networking’s sexier than Blu-ray

The price of Blu-ray players and discs seems set to fall this season, as those involved seek to take the format into the mass market – meanwhile that market’s changing, with consumers flocking to sign-up to location-based social networking services for their mobile phones, a pair of ABI Research reports claim.

“Blu-ray vendors and dealers are starting to realize that for Blu-ray to become the next DVD, they need to lower player prices in order to generate interest and build volumes,” said ABI Research principal analyst Steve Wilson.

CBS: online TV is tonic for broadcasters

CBS Interactive today released preliminary results of an intensive wide study on the impact of its online video streaming on its TV audience.
The ongoing study among 50,000 viewers of content through the broadcaster’s CBS Audience Network was conducted by Magid Media – and the findings should interest any broadcaster experimenting with online strategy:

– CBS’s video streaming of full-episodes attracts a younger audience;
– Online viewers are incremental to broadcast viewers;
– Online video streaming is a net positive for CBS because it drives Web viewers to television.
