Sky opening up to more viewers online

Sky plans to offer its online video content to a much wider range of viewers, making shows available online through its Sky Player service to viewers who aren’t subscribed to its TV shows for the first time, the company said this week.

Sky will launch its subscription TV service via its online Sky Player platform meaning UK and Irish customers will be able subscribe to watch a package of channels from Sky on their PC or Mac without the need to install a TV-based service as well.

Jonathan Ross buys five Macs, uses Sonos

He’s a big Mac user who is addicted to console games and wants his digital music in every room - who is he? It’s Jonathan Ross.

Jonathan Ross seems in vogue for all the wrong reasons, pilloried both by the press and the NIMBY residents of Middle England for some juvenile prank with comedian Russell Brand in which both men dropped the ball while trying to humorously promote a band called the ‘Satanic Sluts’.

Forced to take months off by the BBC’s refusal to stand up for its talent in the face of Mary Whitehouse-style criticism, Ross this week purchased five new model MacBooks to help while away his time.

BBC shows for iTunes Store France

BBC Worldwide has finally reached a deal which brings its rich trove of content to iTunes users in France, with shows from the broadcaster now made available through the French version of the media store.

This follows a similar move this time last month, when shows from the BBC were made available for purchase through the German version of the store.

BBC chooses OMA for iPlayer mobile - Apple lucks out

The BBC’s announcement last week that it will allow users to download television programmes from iPlayer direct to their mobile handsets, via a wireless internet connection or “over the air” is based on a series of deals with technology and licensing companies CMLA, CoreMedia and Intertrust.
 
As a result the BBC is now allowed to use OMA DRM 2.0, a digital rights management protection system developed by the Open Mobile Alliance and offer audiences the ability to download television programmes from BBC iPlayer directly to their mobile device.

BBC calls out Apple over iPlayer DRM drama

The BBC has announced that content downloaded to Windows Media PCs using its iPlayer service can now be side-loaded to a growing family of compatible devices - and stormed at Apple’s reluctance to share its DRM as reason for the lack of feature parity for Mac and iPhone users.

The news means video can be played on any mobile device that supports Windows Media digital rights management. The BBC has assembled a list of compatible devices.

To use the feature users simply select a new ‘for media players’ option when downloading content using the iPlayer service, it can then be pulled across to the device. The BBC will in future iPlayer content available for the Nokia N96.

BBC extends YouTube relationship with new shows

BBC Global News has extended its relationship with YouTube and will add six BBC video news channels in Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Persian and Urdu to its existing BBC World News channel on the Google-owned service.
 
The deal means YouTube users will have access to high quality, independent and impartial news clips produced by the BBC World Service in six languages.
 
Video news stories will run each day across the different language Channels and each channel will be branded and tailored to its specific audience. Videos will also be fully discoverable via Google Video search. Read the rest of this entry »

BBC confirms iPlayer now offers radio for iPhone

iPhone users can now access the BBC’s full selection of radio shows using iPlayer and their Apple mobile (or iPod touch).

You can listen to radio shows up to seven days after they were broadcast. Shows are made available in MP3 format, compressed to 128kb/s, and listeners must have a WiFi connection active in order to download the shows.

The BBC’s Mark Friend (Controller, Multiplatform & Interactive, Audio & Music Interactive) observed, “One of the secrets of radio’s success has been the ability to listen to it while you’re on the move.

BBC launches Eastenders channel on YouTube

BBC Worldwide has created a dedicated EastEnders YouTube channel.

The channel will offer video clips from the last 13 years of the show including memorable scenes and iconic characters including Den and Angie Watts.
