Olympics 2008 a BitTorrent smash

NBC Universal’s decision to delay broadcast of the stunning opening ceremony of the 2008 summer Olympics may have driven US TV audiences to seek out a reliable alternative – BitTorrent.

TorrentFreak today reports the broadcast of the Olympics opening ceremony has been downloaded over one million times already, and the download counters go up every day.

The most popular version is the 5GB HD release, an iPod-ready, a standard definition release of the opening ceremony, and a high definition clip of the torch lighting and fireworks have attracted many downloads.

As previously reported, a Reuters report observed: “As China hoped, the world did tune in for the start of the Beijing Olympics with various polls on Monday estimating about one billion people, or 15 percent of the world’s population, watched the opening ceremony.”
