NTT says shoes can power iPods and mobiles

Japanese telecoms giant NTT is developing a way to recharge portable devices just by walking.

AFP informs the company has developed shoes containing a small generator, itself attached to waterproof shows. Walking causes small turbines to spin, thus generating power.

Right now they generate c.1.2 watts of electricity, enough to keep an iPod playing for as long as you keep walking.

But by 2010 when the company hopes to bring these new devices to market NTT says it hopes the system will generate 3 or more watts of electricity – enough to power your mobile phone.
