OK, the iPod and iTunes refresh season is rapidly approaching, and there’s a whole selection of claims flying round for iTunes 9 – here’s your cut-out-and-keep assemblage of what to expect:
1. Blu-ray support
We’re not sure what this will involve. We note that a recently updated edition of Apple video software, Final Cut Pro, includes support for Blu-ray, but there’s no Blu-ray drive in any Macs – yet…we think the iMac will be the starting point for this. We also anticipate the support may simply be an upgrade to the ‘Digital Copy’ solution Apple came up with last year.
2. Social networking
Last.fm and iLike support from within iTunes – essentially all the music you play will be published to your accounts for these services, if you like…..but there’s more….Apple is developing its very own social networking application to integrate your iLife with your social networks.
Boy Genius Reports: “We’ve been informed that Apple has plans to tie iTunes 9 into a “Social” application that they plan to release in the future. It was said that the application (separate from iTunes) will be similar to Yahoo’s OneConnect offering and consolidate all your social networking services.”
3. iPhone screen controls
You’ll be able to configure where the Apps on your iPhone appear and on which page.
New digital format aims to save the album format, competes with another format aiming to save the album format also in development by the labels.
We suspect there will be more rumours on this software soon – but can we make a feature request? We’d like a simple and effective way to transport libraries between drives and computers without any complexity and in such a way that you don’t lose any of the music. Could someone at Apple please put this together, please? I’ve lost too many tracks when making an upgrade – and I own all my own music, so can’t see the problem….
