iPhone empowers mobile music downloads

iphone-app-chartsApple’s decision to enable music downloads over the air on the iPhone has unleashed new interest in mobile music services, with UK chart invigilators, the Official Charts Company, today launching the first Official Mobile Downloads Chart, to reflect the growing consumption of music on the mobile phone.

“The Official Mobile Downloads Chart has launched to coincide with the release of the first iPhone application to offer Official Charts,” the organisation said.

The recently-introduced iPhone application gives users a weekly update of the Official Singles and Albums Top 40s, as well as the Official Mobile Downloads Chart and highlights of the next week’s new releases.

The Official Mobile Download Chart reflects sales of permanent downloads direct to mobiles and is launched after a recent survey by entertainment retailers’ association ERA highlighted that the mobile phone is rapidly becoming the UK’s favourite music device.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot says, “This new chart reflects the changing ways in which consumers are accessing a consuming music and underlines the Official Charts Company’s commitment to offering data on all types of music consumption. 2008 saw the launch of the world’s first Subscription Plays Chart in the UK – and 2009 will see the development of even more charts and data showcasing the fast-growing digital environment.”

Gerard Grech, Chairman of MEF (Mobile Entertainment Forum) EMEA region: “The mobile download chart is a logical follow-up to the world’s first ringtone chart, which was launched by MEF four years ago. Beyond personalising mobiles with ringtones and ringbacktones, music fans are increasingly turning to their handsets to discover new songs and access music on the move.”
