I made an appearance last weekend on BBC Wales’ technology show, Science Cafe, where I was asked what I think about the iPad.
If you’re interested in what I think (which is basically that the success of this product will rest on the applications created for it, which will make or break its future in the market, I believe), then you can listen to the show on iPlayer right now, at least if you are in the UK.
I’m unsure if there’s other ways to give this a listen, but should there be, do feel free to tell me about them in comments below. Also if you want to agree/disagree with what I said.
Back in 1994, Rolling Stone had a chat with now Apple’s boss, Steve Jobs during his NeXT period. What makes this interview so interesting is it took place at a time in which he was more willing to speak to the press, as he’d been ousted from Apple, etc.
With the iPad in mind, ponder this quote:
“To make step-function changes, revolutionary changes, it takes that combination of technical acumen and business and marketing — and a culture that can somehow match up the reason you developed your product and the reason people will want to buy it. I have a great respect for incremental improvement, and I’ve done that sort of thing in my life, but I’ve always been attracted to the more revolutionary changes. I don’t know why. Because they’re harder. They’re much more stressful emotionally. And you usually go through a period where everybody tells you that you’ve completely failed.”
Also worth pondering what industry “insiders” thought of him at that point – they considered him a spent force. As illustrated – now he makes the cover of The Economist.

Apple is opening yet another store in the UK – this time in a £100 million shopping centre development situated in Newcastle’s Eldon Square.
Apple has signed-up to set up shop in the St Andrew’s Way development, where the store will sit beside those including Hollister, Topshop, Debenhams and more.
Work started on the St Andrew’s Way development in 2007 just as the credit crunch began to bite and when it opens next week it will comprise 23 new retail outlets employing around 800 people.
