Amazon discounts Leopard OS as upgrade looms

Geek report alert: With Mac OS X 10.5.6 Snow Leopard eclipsing sales of Windows 7 on the Amazon US software charts, now’s looking like a pretty promising time to invest in a spare copy of Mac OS X 10.5.6 ‘Leopard’, just in case you want to keep a pristine copy of that OS for any veteran Macs that may come your way. And you’ll need it if you think you’re ever likely to get hold of a PowerPC-based Mac, as these are not supported by Snow Leopard, which is Intel Mac only.

With Snow Leopard hovering on the horizon and expected to ship next month, we thought it might be worth pointing out that Amazon is offering Leopard at a hefty discount through both its US and UK stores.

In the UK you can pick up a copy of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 for just £68.99 – a 17 per cent discount on the original box price. Amazon hasn’t been quite so generous on its remaining stash of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 Family Packs, these are available for £125.32, an astonishing 68-pence cheaper than standard.

US customers looking for the old OS can pick up a copy for 21 per cent less than the original price, so 102.49 will get you a copy of Leopard..

Amazon US is clearly feeling pretty generous to its US customers, offering Apple Mac OS X Version Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5.6 Leopard [5-User Family Pack] at a steep 36 per cent discount – that’s right, $127.50 will grab you five licenses.

Not forgetting of course you can pre-order Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard for just $29 from Amazon US today. And if you purchased a qualifying Mac or Xserve on or after June 8, 2009 that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade to the OS for $9.99.

You can even pre-order Windows 7, if you like, that is.
