‘Hope For Haiti’ album sets digital record

The digital release of the benefit recording of the recent US “Hope For Haiti Now” telethon will enter the U.S. album charts at #1 this week with about 175,000 units sold, reports Hypebot

This represents under three days of digital only sales and is a first for a download only release. “Sources tell Hypebot that the recording is also on track to debut at #1 in some 20 countries, as well as, be one of the top full weekly sellers in iTunes history.”

UPDATED: Apple pushes for cheaper TV downloads

Apple is reported to be attempting to secure a better deal for iTunes-using TV show customers, pushing for lower prices from TV networks.

The Financial Times reports the company to be pushing for shows to cost $1 – half the current cost.

Apple is trying to convince networks that lowering prices would increase sales, thereby making up for any loss in revenue they’d see from the cut.

Vodafone signs 450,000 music subscribers in Europe

Vodafone has announced that nearly 450,000 customers have signed up to its music subscription services in Europe since it inked DRM-free deals with all four major labels in 2009.

That’s the largest number of paying music subscribers in Europe, the operator claimed. Over 2 million DRM-free tracks are currently available, set to grow to 6 million this year.

In December, over 100,000 customers signed up to one of a range of music services offered across the eight largest Vodafone markets in Europe.

Growth in customer subscription numbers is being driven both by the monthly 10-track MP3 bundles as well as from ‘all you can eat’ unlimited access subscription services.

Apple Reports All-Time Highest Revenue and Profit New Accounting Standards Adopted

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 first quarter ended December 26, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $15.68 billion and a net quarterly profit of $3.38 billion, or $3.67 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $11.88 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.26 billion, or $2.50 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.9 percent, up from 37.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

ITC says it will investigate Nokia’s Apple complaint

This could run for a while, as the battle for the smartphone market becomes ever more vicious – now it appears the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington will look into Nokia’s claims against Apple.

The ITC will investigate Nokia’s patent-infringement claims against Apple. If the investigation falls against Apple then iPhone, iPod and Mac shipments into the computer company’s biggest market – the US – may be banned.
