John Forté ships “StyleFREE the EP”, offers free track

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer John Forté is releasing ‘Stylefree The Ep’, his first collection of new music in eight years, via EMI Label Services.

The EP will be distributed to digital retailers in the US this week, marking the 9th year anniversary of Forté’s arrest on charges of drug trafficking. The first single from the EP, “Play My Cards for Me,” is available as a free download at www.johnforte.com.

Apple Launches iTunes Store in Mexico

Apple has launched the iTunes Store in Mexico, offering Mexican and international music from all the major labels and hundreds of independent labels.

Launching with a catalog of millions of songs, the iTunes Store in Mexico features Mexican artists including Paulina Rubio, Vicente Fernandez and Zoe and a wide range of international artists including Shakira, Lady Gaga, Green Day and thousands more.

iLike loves iPhone: unleashes hundreds of apps

iLike has released a veritable storm of iPhone applications, including specific ones for over 250 musical acts and a pretty handy ‘Local Concerts’ app.

The latter provides personalized concert listings and notifications based on scanning the music on any iPod touch
or iPhone.

It lists upcoming shows in a user’s area and provides links to buy tickets. The new upgrade (available soon pending Apple approval) adds key features that leverage iPhone 3.0′s new capabilities:

Get downloads cheaper than iTunes with new service

It appears a price war may be brewing between digital music operators, with the introduction of a new service which compares prices between different operators, including iTunes.

The new Comparedownload.com website compares track prices between iTunes, Amazon, 7Digital, Play.com, Tesco Digital and We7, offering comparisons for 10 million tracks, alongside reviews, artist info and gig tickets.

The debut of the site may take a chink out of iTunes sales, as in frequent cases a price comparison reveals tracks to be available on alternative services, sometimes at much lower prices.

Unreleased Bob Marley reggae explosion hits iTunes

The great advantage of digital music, at least in theory, is that online music sales and rental means no piece of music ever needs to be made unavailable….

Well, that’s the potential, though licensing problems and torpor get in the way, good news today then is that a new Bob Marley & The Wailers EP, ‘I Know A Place’ is being released for the first time, along with a host of previously deleted reggae albums, compilations and tracks – and all this reggae-reggae goodness is going to be made available exclusively through iTunes.

The Island 50th Anniversary Reggae promotion, featuring special offers today through August 17, marks an important milestone for the genre in the download world, the company says.

We7 responds to Spotify funding news

Spotify grabs $50m while iPhone approval waits

spotify_logoSpotify has secured $50 million in investment funding, even while company staff anxiously wait to see if Apple gives permission for the music streaming service to offer an application to iPhones.

Spotify has attracted over two million users so far and is whispered as a service likely to threaten Apple’s iTunes. It offers users the chance to stream songs using the internet without downloading tracks.

Ads-supported, it also offers download sales and a £9.99 ad-free subscription service, membership of which is required to use the iPhone app.

Netflix video service aims at iPhone

netflixNetflix is developing a streaming application that will enable iPhone users to stream movies offered by the service over a WiFi connection, reports claim.

This ‘Watch Instantly’ feature is already available to Mac and PC users on an unlimited plan, as it is to Xbox 360 owners. Some reports also claim the online video sales giant intends offering the service to the Nintendo Wiii in future.

The original report states: “The company will soon offer the Watch Instantly video-streaming feature on Apple iPhones and iPod Touch devices and the Nintendo Wii gaming console, according to an industry executive familiar with Netflix’s plans.”
