Apple may plan ad-funded iTunes music sales

itunesdownloadHot news from the analysts at Music Ally, who recently pored through transcripts of a hugely important UK Copyright Tribunal case to surprisingly find out that Apple’s iTunes has some ambitions toward launching an ad-supported music service.

We’re not going to give out all the information on the matter – you’ll have to contact leading UK music industry analyst firm Music Ally to find out more, but Judge Fysh QC, presiding over the Tribunal, was driven to state, “iTunes may well carry advertising in future”.

We7 is UK’s NO. 1 music site, inks GQ deal

ituneslogoWe7 becomes UK’s no 1 music streaming site, beats Last.fm, makes joint deal with men’s mag, GQ.

GQ.com has teamed up with Peter Gabriel’s UK based music streaming service, We7, to let visitors listen to music across the men’s magazine’s website.

The service goes live on August 3 and will feature a jukebox on GQ.com which lets users play bespoke playlists, with tracks picked by GQ.com’s editorial team, while visitors can click through to We7 to buy tracks.

iTunes will sell four billion tracks this year

D45The iTunes Store has sold eight billion songs since launch in mid-2003, Apple executives confirmed last week, and recent months have seen music sales climb sky-high to a dizzying four billion projected track sales this year alone.

Spotify iPhone video demo is here

Spotify has published this YouTube video of its iPhone app, which will be made available to premium subscribers if Apple approves the application.

If approved, it could be made available, “in days”, reports claim.

Apple and majors developing new album formats

Rolling-Stones,-The-Their-Satanic-Majesties-Request-(Remastered)Apple and the major labels are working to develop new interactive booklets, sleeve notes and other interactive features in an attempt to boost album sales.

A report from the Financial Times claims the labels and Apple are working to deliver the results of the project, dubbed, “Cocktail”, the report claims citing four people “familiar with the situation”.

“It’s all about re-creating the heyday of the album when you would sit around with your friends looking at the artwork, while you listened to the music,” said one executive familiar with the plans.

Apple plans iTunes music streaming?

itunesWith over two million European users, music streaming service Spotify hopes to launch itself as an application for the iPhone – but doesn’t know if Apple will permit the move.

The European service is now recruiting staff for a US launch. Andres Sehr from the company said: “We really don’t know if Apple will give us the go-ahead, and all we can do it submit our software then wait and see.”

Microsoft is dying

microsoftLook, I try – I really do – to maintain this little hobby blog’s focus on digital media and music, but if we’re looking at technology then we’ve got to address this point:

Microsoft is dying.

It seems to offer no innovation. Its operating systems aren’t sufficiently user-centric. About the only great product it sells – the Xbox – is so heavily subsidised the company loses money on the range.
