‘No truth in live music noise limit claims’ says UK.gov

flipronThe UK Government has responded to a widespread protest at claims it plans to force live music venues to install noise limiting devices as part of the requirements for a live music license, saying it has no intention to implement such plans.

Sky hooks Omnifone for its music service?

musical_notesAiming to offer subscribers an “all-you-can-eat” music service, satellite broadcaster Sky is in talks with Omnifone to provide the infrastructure for the service, a report today claims.

Pocket-Lint has learned of talks between the two firms, and while no final decision appears to have been made yet, it’s doubtful Sky wants to delay introduction of the service for too long, as it was announced in summer last year. The satellite giant is clearly the latest contender to attempt to bite a chunk from Apple’s iTunes’ UK music sales dominance.

Apple preps iTunes streaming service

“Apple is believed to be wrapping up a new feature in iTunes 8 that will allow users to stream their iTunes video purchases directly from the company’s servers for playback anywhere, anytime without eating up local storage.

“Dubbed iTunes Replay, the service would allow iTunes shoppers to build out their digital video collection without worrying about the space needed to store the often hefty media files. It’s unclear whether Apple plans to charge for the service, which is said to support both iTunes Movie and TV show purchases.”

YouTube to sell video downloads

“YouTube took a step towards monetization by allowing partners to charge users for downloads.

“In this “test” initiative, selected YouTube partners can offer their video downloads for free or for a fee (determined by the partner) paid through Google Checkout. Most videos in the test are currently charging about $1 each.

“The partner can also decide how the downloadable video will be licensed to the user – whether it will be restricted to a private non-commercial use video, or whether it can be used under Creative Commons.

UK charts spawn iPhone application

iphone-app-chartsPossibly reflecting Apple’s growing importance to music sales, the UK’s official music chart management company today introduced its very own application for the iPhone and the iPod touch.

The Official Charts Company is launching the application for iPhone and iPod touch users. This will provide music fans with a weekly update of the Official Charts.
 
The application, called Official UK Music Charts is now available on the Apple’s iTunes App store.

Spotify now available to everyone in the UK – Spotify

Starting today people in the UK will no longer need an invitation to join Spotify.
