G N’ R: 25k iTunes sales, 7Digital undercuts

New reports claim first-week US sales of the long-awaited Guns ‘N’ Roses album, ‘Chinese Democracy’, have reached between 300,000 to 500,000 copies.

The report also claims the album has seen 25,000 downloads through the iTunes Store in the US, though the album won’t show up in the charts until next week.

The band’s free MySpace streaming premiere of the album attracted 8,429,387 plays in the first four days.

McCartney: No Beatles on iTunes soon

It’s so frustrating that one of the world’s most-pirated bands hasn’t yet been offered a deal it can accept to go online, with Paul McCartney today telling Billboard that even though the surviving members of the band would like to go for it, negotiations aren’t going well.

“That is constantly being talked of, we’d like to do it,” McCartney told Billboard.

“We are very for it, we’ve been pushing it,” he said. “But there are a couple of sticking points, I understand. So the last word I got back was that it had stalled, the whole process…They [EMI] want something we’re not prepared to give them.”

Apple plans MultiTouch iMac, wearable displays?

Rumours: Touchy-feelie iMacs and video headgear looms?Apple’s research and development teams are hard at work on powerful new technologies which may debut in 2009, including a fully touchscreen iMac and wearable video displays (that latter perhaps under some kind of arrangement with Sony).

On a tour of LG Electronic’s factory in Korea, hard-working journalists unearthed technology which could drive a multi-touch iMac, which the report claims is “ready to go”.

Springsteen offers free iTunes track – today only

Bruce Springsteen has reached an arrangement with iTunes under which the latest single from the legendary artist is being made available for free download from the Apple music service – but you’d better snag it fast as it will only be available for free today.

The new single, ‘Working on a Dream’, is also available for free download today from the artist’s own website, BruceSpringsteen.net.

Springsteen’s latest album, also called ‘Working on a Dream’, will be available on January 26 through Columbia records. The title track made its debut at both iTunes and the artist’s site today, and you can download the song for nothing right now.

Facebook fails $500m Twitter takeover

Facebook has failed in its bid to acquire Twitter for $500 million in stock following several weeks of intensive discussion, Kara Swisher reports for D: All Things Digital.

A deal between the two companies has been whispered of for weeks, but there was in fact meat on rumour’s bone, the report informs. Discussions began at the behest of Facebook in mid-October, the report informs.

Apple updates iPhone SDK

Apple has released new tools for developers creating applications for the iPhone and iPod touch, iPhone SDK 2.2. The release follows last week’s introduction of the new 2.2 software for users running the devices.

The 1.6GB download is optimized for devices with firmware 2.2 installed and requires the host Mac be running Mac OS X 10.5.5 (the latest version of the OS). The SDK is made available free to registered developers.

Most MP3 players are mobile phones

Mobile phones which play MP3s are outselling CD players by five to one to become the UK’s favourite music devices – at least that’s what the research claims.

The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) has released GfK data which shows that over the past two years over 44 million mobile phones have been sold in the UK that can play MP3s.

That compares with sales of just over 8 million CD players over the same period, ERA said.

How to recharge your iPod – with an onion!

Owen Louis is doing his bit for the environment by charging his iPod with an onion, says the Sun.

He bores two holes in the veg before soaking it in an energy drink for two hours when he inserts a USB cable into the vegetable. The process produces enough power to charge his iPod for an hour.

Boxee team ships full fix for Apple TV 2.3

< !– google_ad_section_start –>After a frenetic few days work, developers Scott Davilla and Stephan Diederich last night posted a full and slick fix to enable easy installation of Boxee on Apple TV models running the recently released 2.3 software, which broke the third-party media centre software.< !– google_ad_section_end –>

The team has released an updated patchstick which will easily install boxee/XBMC. Patches released earlier this weekend worked, but offered relatively complex installation, requiring use of Terminal and SSH, now it’s as easy as plug-and-play.
