iPhone users are being offered an application which promises to let them access all their media wherever they happen to be, with, or without, iTunes.

OrbLive turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a multimedia receiver. It’s a combined service (requiring a home-based media server and iPhone software) which the developers promise will let you receive live TV, listen to music and watch downloaded video content through their device. Users also need to open a MyCast account with the developers of the software.

This promises users instant access to photos, music, videos, live television, and other digital content on their home computer at anytime and from any internet-connected device, such as a mobile phone, PDA or laptop.

Wifi is required for video, but users can access music and images using 3G or Edge the developers claim. “Select your media, and push play. No need to synch or upload to a website ahead of time. OrbLive plays any media, in virtually any format.”

At present the media server side of the equation is available only for Windows, though the company is promising a version of the software for all the Mac and Linux users soon.

And here’s a video explaining what this interesting software’s capable of.
