Sony BMG Q1 sales fall…

Sony BMG Music Entertainment lost $49 million on sales in its first fiscal quarter, the company confirmed yesterday. This contrasts with the same period last year, when the company had a new income of $21 million.

The company’s three best sellers this year have been Usher’s Here I Stand, Leona Lewis’ Spirit and Neil Diamond’s Home Before Dark.

Warner Music gets social with uplayme.com

Following Atlantic’s introduction of its socially-connected Fanbase application this week, Warner Music has invested in its own music and social networking start-up, uplayme.com.

In a related move, Dan Pelson left his post as Senior VP of Global Consumer Marketing at Warner Music to become CEO of uPlayMe. The smaller company introduced its new recommendation tools for sharing music and video with others this week.

NBC Universal joins MSFT Olympic relay

In an exclusive partnership with Microsoft, NBC Universal will offer what it claims to be the single most ambitious digital event coverage ever including 2,200 hours of live competition encompassing 25 sports on NBCOlympics.com, with thousands more available on demand.

NBC Olympics Mobile will present the comprehensive coverage of the event, including mobile TV broadcasts, news text and video alerts.

Ex-Def Jam, Rob Stevenson to lead Virgin America

Nick Gatfield, EMI Music’s new President, A&R, North America, UK & Ireland, has appointed Rob Stevenson to a top creative post leading EMI’s Virgin imprint in America. 

As President of Virgin US, Stevenson will report to Gatfield and will be based in New York.  He starts in his new position on August 15.

Trivium hatch 24-hr MP3 promo plan

Million-selling US metal-merchants, Trivium, are marking the launch of their new album ‘SHOGUN’ with the release of a free MP3 download of ‘Kirisute Gomen’, the album’s title track.

The new track will be made available for download for just 24-hours from 5am GMT tomorrow, Thursday 31st July. It will downloadable from all Roadrunner and Trivium websites.

The song title refers to the execution privileges of a Japanese Samurai warrior. The band have also made the attached artwork for the MP3 available.

Universal stabs iTunes, launches ‘Lost Tunes’

Universal Music has today introduced its own cross-platform music download service, offering rare tracks at near lossless quality – and has called the service ‘LostTunes’, in an indirect stab at Apple’s iTunes service,

Available online at Lost Tunes, Universal describes the service as a “groundbreaking online download store dedicated to exclusives, rarities and overlooked classics”.

Lost Tunes is a major project for Universal Music which began just over a year ago, with a dedicated team and have been searching through the Universal Music archives for forgotten gems.

R. Kelly album leaks online

The upcoming album from US r&b performer, R Kelly, ”12 Play: 4th Quarter’, has leaked online.

The as yet unreleased album was spotted yeserday on BitTorrent networks, a US digital music rumour website claimed, though alternative reports claimed the album may have leaked earlier than this.

The official word on the release is that it is “coming soon”.

T-Mobile challenge for iTunes films

T-Mobile will challenge iTunes with its own video-on-demand service for full length video, including film.

The company plans offering a dual service in which content can be watched using a mobile phone or a computer, New Media Age reports.

T-Mobile is currently discussing its notion with a variety of content suppliers, including Ministry of Sound, EMI, ITV, Universal and Warner.

Dell takes on Apple in digital music

Dell is making plans to enter the digital music market once again, and has been testing a new music player that may go on sale as soon as September, a report claims.

It’s not the first time Dell has attempted to secure space in the digital music market, but it withdrew its previous MP3 player – the DJ Ditty (pictured) – in the face of the Apple juggernaut (and extremely low sales).
